World Rivers Day: Paddle the Maitai river

Date: Saturday 13 September (wet weather backup Sunday 22 September)
Time: 12:45pm for safety briefing
Location: lower Mahitahi/Maitai River, Rutherford Park, opposite Trafalgar Centre at the launch spot by the big sculpture.
The tide is extra high (a King tide) which means the lower part of the river can be paddled.
What to bring:
- paddle vessel
- PFD (Personal Floatation Device)
- leash if using a paddle board
- towel
- plenty of water
- perhaps a picnic
- dress for the conditions
What else will there be at the event?
- the Big Tāhuna – a giant paddle board that can fit up to 8 kids or 10 adults! So, gather your whānau or a group of friends and see how you go.
- an on-shore Activity Zone with river themed activities, juices, and ice blocks.
Competition: From the 1st September, find the Golden Fish to go in the draw to win exclusive use of the Big Tahuna (8-person giant paddle board). The golden fish hidden in the Elma Turner library - check out the display on the Children’s Wall for details and to enter.
Other paddleboards/kayaks can be hired through Paddle Nelson using code FREEPADDLE - first in first served basis
