Author Talk: Andrew Tilling – Jogoo the Rooster
Join us for a lively talk with Andrew Tilling as he shares stories from his memoir Jogoo the Rooster.
From a wildlife-filled childhood in East Africa to a global career in environmental and conservation work, Andrew Tilling’s journey spans continents and decades. Hear firsthand about his experiences in sustainable development, indigenous forest conservation, and the challenges of working across cultures and political systems. Wry, insightful, and deeply human—this is a talk not to be missed.
About the author
Andrew Tilling has multi-disciplinary academic qualifications and a very varied practical career in tropical and temperate areas, with development agencies, NGOs, governments, and local communities. His main interest and experience are in participatory natural resource management, with a focus on indigenous forest conservation. He is now retired and lives in Ruby Bay, near Nelson, with his wife.
“Sustainable development, like war, is easy to initiate, but often endsbadly. Wry and self-deprecating, Andrew Tilling gives the reader a fascinating insider's guide to the trials and tribulations of 'development' from Africa to Asia and finally Oceania with salutary lessons for us all”. - Dr Wren Green, Former Director, Planning and External Relations, DOC. Subsequently, undertook considerable work for the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, and was a consultant for 20 years.
“It is an excellent book which shows his love for sustainable development and biodiversity. Most of all his affection for the poor”. - Dr Addis Tsehaye, Senior Auditor, AssureQuality Christchurch. Former Head of Technical Department, Wood Utilisation and Research Centre, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
