About this Event
Introduction
TNN Hong Kong is hosting our first ever yoga and wellbeing workshop to mark World Mental Health Day 2024. The workshop will include both active and restful yoga sessions with a short sharing circle hosted by volunteers Heinok and Valerie. Participants can expect to practice and take home movement, breathwork and mindfulness tools to use in their work and daily lives, in moments of need, to care for themselves and check in on their mental health.
WMHD Yoga - Why are we having this event?
World Mental Health Day is celebrated globally every year on 10 October, to raise awareness and mobilise efforts in support of mental health. This year’s theme is “it’s time to prioritise mental health in the workplace”, highlighting the importance of mental health and wellbeing in the workplace, for the benefit of people, organisations, and communities.
Session description
Our 1.5h workshop will flow in the following way:
7:30-8:05pm
Yoga to relieve physical tension caused by long working hours, led by Heinok Fan
An active practice focused on yoga asana and functional movement that can be done in the workplace or at home.
8:10-8:45pm
Rest practices to support nervous system regulation, led by Valerie Teh
A guided session with gentle yoga asana, mindful breathwork and sound healing, all promoting down-regulation of the stress response.
8:45-9:00pm
Closing Circle
A reflective circle for participants to share any thoughts or feelings following the session.
Ticketing
We aim to make fitness for mental health accessible in Hong Kong. That’s why we offer places in our classes for free for those experiencing financial hardship.
This TNN Yoga workshop costs 1000 HKD, 300 is an NGO discounted rental of the space and 350 goes to each of our amazing instructors as we believe in fair pay.
If you donate 250 or 350 dollars, you will be ‘paying it forward’ and providing a space in this yoga workshop and future yoga classes for someone facing financial hardship.
We want everyone to have access to the support they need, regardless of their identity or circumstance.
Sea Sky Garden
Sea Sky Garden is located at a private rooftop in Kennedy Town. The space offers a beautiful panoramic view of the Victoria Harbour. There are yoga mats, blocks and a toilet available on location. Exact location will be sent to participants through email before the event.
Host bios
Heinok Fan
Heinok (she/her) is a yoga instructor and singing bowl sound healer. With her background in yoga, healthcare and mental health advocacy, her goal is to make wellness and movement accessible to more people here in Hong Kong. She is Volunteer and Move Partners Lead for TNN Hong Kong, having led donation based yoga classes for TNN over the last year and a half. As an upbeat and supportive individual, expect her vinyasa classes to be filled with functional flows, anatomical cues and various options of yoga shapes on offer to encourage attendees to believe ‘movement is a form of medicine’.
Valerie Teh
Valerie (she/her) is an integrative rest facilitator and mental health advocate who is passionate about supporting those who are busy and burnt out with accessible yet transformational practices. Her spaces are rooted in mindfulness and weave sound, movement, breathwork and conversation to support and empower. With facilitation experience in the UK and China, she is currently a Trainer for TNN Hong Kong and hosts several peer support groups including Good Grief and Healing Hearts.
TNN Hong Kong
The New Normal Charity is a Hong Kong registered S88 charity 91/19147.
We are a charity that provides accessible mental health support to people who are struggling to access help. We do this by empowering and training people with lived experience to facilitate free peer support groups. Alongside this we provide accessible mental health training and community activities - because no one should face mental pain alone.
