Workshop: Encaustics (Wax + Heat)

Students are introduced to encaustic painting, first, by explaining its use as a medium throughout art history. Then, through hands-on mixing and application of paint, pigment and wax medium. Students learn the fundamentals of painting with encaustic and basics of building their own studio as well as new ways to think
critically about their work.
Features and characteristics of encaustic medium will be explored through the history of and creation of encaustic medium. Through the use of paint, pigments, scrapers, brushes, mixed media, stencils, embedded objects, incising, collage, mark-making tools and working with grids, students learn to build and fuse layers
and create texture. Issues of color, contrast and composition along with shape, pattern, texture, mass and depth will be addressed through discussions on using encaustic as a medium in creating abstract landscapes, non-representational abstractions and representational work.
