The 80-square-mile Roaring Creek watershed lies in Columbia, Montour, and Northumberland Counties; it includes the popular trails around the reservoirs in Weiser State Forest as well as the farm country surrounding Fisherdale, Mill Grove, Numidia, Slabtown – and Knoebels. Just as we had done in the “SITEexchange” show, we want to see your artwork, in any medium, that celebrates this lovely part of our region -- and especially the interactions of the people of the region with each other and/or with the landscape.
In the Cherokee language, the word for "community" gets transliterated as "sgadugi". (For pronunciation, visit cherokeelanguage.org/words/community-sgadugi-western.) Sgadugi means "a group of interacting living beings – the people, animals, plants, and more – sharing their environment". It also means "a social unit of humans who share common values".
What does the community in the Roaring Creek Valley mean to you? How do we, the human inhabitants, interact with the landscape and with each other? How do we represent all of this in artwork? The Exchange seeks artwok in any medium that speaks to the community of the Roaring Creek Valley.
And what stories do we have of the watershed? Daniel Brassington, the president of the Roaring Creek Conservation Association, grew up in one of the last farms in the area to get electricity and plumbing; he remembers a basin of water in his bedroom freezing solid on winter mornings. Mary Rose Luby, RCVCA secretary, grew up on another farm in the valley, and she remembers her parents becoming activists on behalf of the migrant workers who passed through the area.
This show marks the second collaboration between The Exchange and the Roaring Creek Valley Conservation Association, which seeks to conserve the natural resources of the basin and its rich culture through watershed stewardship, education, and monitoring. All media accepted, 2D and 3D, up to the size of our front door. Work from ALL artists of all ages and levels of experience encouraged.
Work due Saturday, June 13th; the show runs Monday, June 15th, through Friday, July 24th, with a reception 5-8 p.m. on Friday, July 3rd.
The storytelling event that we will host in collaboration with this exhibition happens on June 23rd: facebook.com/events/1496854318679928.
