In association with the Exchange Gallery exhibition "The Community of the Roaring Creek Valley", we invite you to come tell your stories on that same theme. We put out the call for entries for the exhibition saying this: "In the Cherokee language, the word for 'community' gets transliterated as 'sgadugi'. (For pronunciation, visit cherokeelanguage.org/words/community-sgadugi-western.) Sgadugi means 'a group of interacting living beings – the people, animals, plants, and more – sharing their environment'. It also means 'a social unit of humans who share common values'.
"What does the community in the Roaring Creek Valley mean to you? How do we, the human inhabitants, interact with the landscape and with each other? How do we represent all of this in artwork? The Exchange seeks artwok in any medium that speaks to the community of the Roaring Creek Valley.
"And what stories do we have of the watershed? Daniel Brassington, the president of the Roaring Creek Conservation Association, grew up in one of the last farms in the area to get electricity and plumbing; he remembers a basin of water in his bedroom freezing solid on winter mornings. Mary Rose Luby, RCVCA secretary, grew up on another farm in the valley, and she remembers her parents becoming activists on behalf of the migrant workers who passed through the area."
Artists can interpret that theme in any way -- and storytellers can too: Do you have a story about what you used to believe and now don't? About what you did not believe and now do? About how a belief has shaped you? You can bring prose, or poetry, or a song -- anything that tells a story.
We would like to hear from you ahead of time about what you plan to present (and please, keep it no more than PG-13 and no more than 10-12 minutes or so). Please call or e-mail to sign up -- 570-317-2596 or [email protected].
Limited audience seating in the Exchange Gallery available: Please call or e-mail to make a reservation if you can -- 570-317-2596, [email protected].
Donations accepted at the door -- $10 suggested, anything accepted.
We will record the event for later upload to YouTube.

"The Universe is made of stories, not of atoms." -- Muriel Rukeyser
The Exchange looks at our storytelling events as opportunities to build a shared sense of this community's and this region's identity -- what, after all, does "Columbia-Montour" mean to you? Even for those of us who live here (and who love living here), that name does not instantly evoke the same sort of clarity and certainty that "The Poconos" or "Lancaster County" or even "The Endless Mountains" does.
But, we believe, if we tell our stories to each other, and share what we find important about this region, we can start to build the sort of "brand" that those other regions have.
