ART AND MUSIC IN DIALOGUE: An evening of guzheng and voice with Kang Yang, responding to Christopher Kurtz’s BADLANDS.
About this Event

Wood & Resonance
Kang Yang · Guzheng & Baritone
Alex Arenare · Piano

An intimate evening of live music presented by Artera Foundation in collaboration with Sarah Myerscough Gallery, created in dialogue with Christopher Kurtz’s exhibition BADLANDS.

The shimmering strings of the guzheng, the warmth of the baritone voice and the expressive range of the piano meet within a landscape of wooden sculptures. Heard up close, delicate resonances give way to sweeping gestures, inviting audiences to experience the exhibition through sound.

Taking its title from the eroded terrain of South Dakota—a landscape embedded in Kurtz’s own history—BADLANDS centres on a monumental installation of wooden “skipping stones”, carved from studio offcuts accumulated over two decades. These remnants form an immersive landscape, bringing the passage of time and the process of making into view.

Set among Kurtz’s sculptures, Kang Yang, joined by pianist Alex Arenare, presents a programme specially curated in response to the exhibition, including a new work commissioned for the occasion. Through wood, strings, voice and space, the evening opens a conversation between musical traditions and contemporary sculpture.

Guests are welcomed from 6 pm for a drinks reception and time to explore the exhibition and socialise. The one-hour performance begins at 6:30 pm, followed by an informal social gathering and conversation.
