That is why Won’t You Be My Neighbor? is worth a room.
Morgan Neville’s documentary about Fred Rogers is not interesting because it says “kindness is good.” That would be too easy. It is interesting because it shows a person trying to make gentleness serious in a culture that often treats gentleness as weakness, performance, or children’s programming.
And somehow that feels more radical now, not less.
This is a film about attention, childhood, television, public life, moral imagination, and whether a person can speak softly without becoming naïve.
I don’t want a sentimental nostalgia bath.
I want the harder conversation: what kind of public kindness is real, what kind is fake, and why modern life seems so bad at telling the difference.

- “Is his kindness simple, or is it actually disciplined?”

- “What would a grown-up version of neighbourliness look like now?”

“What moment felt least sentimental and most real?”
Then we’ll stay close to the film: Fred Rogers, television, childhood, public kindness, emotional honesty, religion without salesmanship, and why softness can sometimes be more demanding than toughness.
