Women’s lives in WW2

As part of the 2026 Heritage Open Days Festival, English Heritage are offering a free talk by an expert volunteer looking at the lives of women throughout World War 2. Join us at the entrance to the castle on 16 September at either 11am or 1:30pm. Spaces are limited so booking is essential. Talks last approx 1 hour.
Built by Henry VIII to defend the shores, this Tudor fortress has withstood two world wars, a lengthy siege and centuries of coastal drama. Today, it’s your turn to storm the ramparts, race through hidden tunnels, and uncover the castle’s wartime secrets. With grassy lawns for picnics, sweeping views, and impressive historic guns, it’s the perfect place for a full day of discovery.
