Quarterstaff combat for Stage and Screen!

Probably most famous for being the weapon of choice for Little John of Robin Hood fame. The quarterstaff was a weapon used in from the medieval period into the renaissance and beyond. No is your chance to get your hands on one and give it a try!

This intro workshop will cover:

· Footwork

· Long form and short form parries and attacks

Suitable for beginners and those with experience.

Great for fans of Pirates of the Caribbean, Game of Thrones or books like Lord of the Rings, Fourth Wing or A Court of Thorns and Roses.

What is a quarterstaff?

A quarterstaff is a wooden stick around 6ft in length which can be used as a staff or a weapon and is a little like a primitive spear. Most often used by travellers or low classes it is considered a very English weapon.

Is a Bo staff different to quarterstaff?

Yes and no. Both are long wooden sticks but, come from different traditions with different fighting techniques. Quarterstaff is rooted in Western European tradition with Bo staffs being strongly associated with some Japanese Martial arts.

Run by Swashbuckling Cornwall (SC) these are short, high-energy workshops giving you an introduction to the world of stage and screen combat.

SC specialises in Stage/Screen Combat is the sort of fighting you see on stage and screen and is a way of creating dramatic scenes of conflict without anyone getting hurt, though choregraphed movements. Its origins are ancient, but the ‘modern’ version comes from the Elizabethan era.

Suitable for 18+ No previous experience required, but to get the most from the session some experience is suggested.

This is a physical workshop as such a basic level of fitness and mobility is required to take part. All workshops are undertaken at your own risk.
