The next bookclub will be all about books that have been banned. We will be reading 'I know why the caged bird sings' by Maya Angelou.About this Event
Please note that this book club is for women from diverse background.
This month we are highlighting books that have been banned!
For centuries books have been banned or challenged on the basis of racial issues, violence, religious affiliations or the sexual nature of the story to name a few.
Maya Angelou 'I know why the caged bird sings,' has been banned because of its descriptions of drug use, violence, explicit sex scenes, racial issues and injustices. The autobiography is groundbreaking as one of the first to talk about child sexual abuse from the perspective of the victim, and from the perspective of a Black woman.
According to the American Library Association, ' I know why the caged bird sings' is regarded as one of the most frequently challenged or banned books.
Please note that the book does deal with heavy themes.
Tickets are free, and are on a first come first serve basis.
I look forward to discussing this book, and other banned books at the next bookclub!
