Join us as we welcome acclaimed Newcastle artist Paula Thistleton to Wester Gallery for her upcoming solo exhibition, Women on Chairs, and Objects.
Known for her distinctive figurative paintings and keen observations of everyday life, Thistleton's latest body of work continues her exploration of people, place and the objects that surround us. Through intimate compositions and her characteristic painterly approach, these works invite viewers into moments of quiet reflection, familiarity and connection.
"Paula’s work explores the commodification of women’s fashion through imagery sourced from high-end fashion magazines. Through a process of repetition and reinterpretation, the subject gradually transforms into an abstraction of the original figure. The repeated image becomes a further act of objectification, reflecting the way women’s bodies are reproduced, consumed, and aestheticised within fashion media. In dissolving the figure into fragments of form, line, and colour, the work simultaneously critiques and celebrates the seductive visual language of fashion imagery."
