Join us for a book club celebrating women in art. Whether you're an art historian, a beginner, or just love art, everyone is welcome at the table. For this first spring season of the club, we'll be starting out with "The Story of Art Without Men" by Katy Hessel, a general overview of overlooked women artists across time. This is a gorgeous book with full color illustrations; the audiobook is wonderfully narrated, as well. Then we'll be reading Linda Nochlin's "Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?" This is a staple in the feminist art history sphere, and this edition also includes Nochlin's follow-up essay written thirty years later. Finally, we will look at how women's bodies have been viewed and displayed across time in Catherine McCormack's "Women in the Picture". From renaissance paintings to present day advertisements, we'll look at how women countered these depictions in their own art to explore identity, sexuality, race, and power.
Come to one session or all three, and get 10% off the selected books from AGB. This book club is free to join and open to the public.
In the summer season, we'll be diving into individual artists and art movements. Stay tuned for those dates and book announcements!

This book club is led by Julie Hansard, a bookseller and the Creative Director for All Good Books. Julie graduated Summa cum Laude from Winthrop University in 2019, with a BA in Art and Minor in Art History and was the recipient of the Art History Travel Fund Award. When she's not at the bookstore or leafing through medieval manuscripts, you can find her painting, snuggling her cats, and reading every book she can find. View her work at juliekart.com/gallery.
