500 Days in the Wild is an extraordinary and deeply human story of adventure, resilience, and hope. Award-winning filmmaker Dianne Whelan spent six years traversing more than 24,000 kilometres of the Trans Canada Trail by foot, canoe, bike, skis, and snowshoes, becoming the first person to complete the route connecting the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic oceans.
For a woman in her 50s who was not an extreme athlete, the journey was sometimes gruelling, occasionally harrowing, often exhilarating, and always surprising. Beginning the expedition alone — disillusioned by the state of the world and deeply concerned about climate change — Whelan set out in search of different ways of caring for the land and for each other. Along the way, she encountered remarkable people, breathtaking landscapes, and unexpected moments of connection that transformed her outlook on life.
She emerged from the journey wiser, more hopeful, in love, and passionate about sharing this inspiring story. Blending stunning cinematography with humour, honesty, and reflection, 500 Days in the Wild is a powerful celebration of courage, community, and the healing power of nature.
