Window Keeper Writing Marathon
About this Event
As the nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, communities across the country are asking an enduring question:
Whose stories help us understand who we have been, who we are, and who we hope to become?
The Western Pennsylvania Writing Project, in partnership with Pennsylvania Humanities, invites you to participate in The Window Keeper, a series of place-based writing experiences exploring history, community, memory, and civic life.
During each gathering, participants will visit meaningful places across Western Pennsylvania, pause to notice what often goes unseen, and reflect through observation, conversation, and writing. Educators, writers, artists, students, historians, community leaders, cultural workers, and curious community members are all welcome.
To make the experience accessible and easy to navigate, chartered bus transportation will be provided between the featured locations for the Pittsburgh and Westmoreland County gatherings. Participants will travel together, allowing everyone to focus on the places, stories, and conversations rather than coordinating transportation between stops.
All writing materials and resources will be provided, and food and refreshments will be available during each gathering. Participants only need to bring their curiosity, comfortable clothing and shoes, and a willingness to pay attention.
No previous writing experience is necessary.

📍 Westmoreland County — August 22 (Westmoreland Museum of Art and West Overton Village)
📍 University of Pittsburgh — September 12 (Carnegie Museum of Art and University of Pittsburgh)
Participants may register for one or more gatherings.
Registration is open through August 10.
