10 Mile South Paddle Trail (428/Greenbelt) — Lake Ray Roberts State Park 🛶🦦🦅
Scenic Wildlife Paddle | Flexible Distance (1–10 Miles)
Welcome to one of the most wildlife-packed paddle routes in North Texas: the 10 Mile South Paddle Trail at Lake Ray Roberts State Park — Greenbelt / 428 Access.
This section of the lake is a true nature corridor. Every season brings action, from massive birds overhead to otters swimming right alongside your board or kayak. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful paddle, a photography-worthy day on the water, or your next “I can’t believe we saw that” adventure, this trail is the one.
🦅 Wildlife You Can Expect to See (All Seasons)
This area is famous for big sightings and frequent activity:
Osprey hunting above the water
Bald Eagles soaring or perched nearby
Large Belted Kingfishers zipping and rattling along the shoreline
Cormorants, loons, and other diving birds
Great Blue Herons (up to 5 feet tall) posted like statues in the shallows
Green Herons tucked into the brush
And the real locals?
🦦 Otters & Beavers Run This Trail
This is prime habitat for river wildlife:
Beaver dens
Otter dens
slides and shoreline trails
and yes… otters are commonly seen swimming nearby, even in cooler months
🐟 Fishing & Water Life
The water here is loaded with fish and wildlife activity. You’ll often spot fish movement, and this area is known to hold some impressive species including alligator gar.
✅ Choose Your Distance (You Don’t Have to Paddle All 10 Miles)
Despite the name, this paddle is flexible and beginner-friendly.
This route is mostly obstacle-free, and you can choose your adventure:
1 mile (easy out-and-back)
3 miles (great casual paddle)
5 miles (solid workout + scenery)
10 miles (full trail challenge)
No pressure. We set this up so you can paddle at your pace and enjoy the experience.
