Details:

Students will learn breathing techniques to regain focus during high stress situations where self and situational awareness is key to patient assesment. Class covers the MARCH assessment system developed by the US military and used by most FD/EMS departments. We will do hands on application of multiple types of tourniquets and techniques.  We will cover when and why to use wound packing, how to secure an airway, understanding a pneumothorax (collapsed lung), assessing circulation to determine severity, head injuries and recognizing when it is serious, hypothermia as related to trauma, and treating for shock. Students will participate in scenarios with eachother and using medical dummies for training during class to receive hands on training. The skills covered in class will range from addressing personal safety upon first approach to a patient, and through the whole process of giving first aid care and transporting the patient.

The class will be part lecture and part station breakouts for hands on.

This class is geared for adults, however mature minors 14 and up are welcome to join. We do not set an age minimum but rather set a maturity standard. It is up to the parents to decide if they feel their child or teen is mature enough for a 6 hour first aid class. All students are expected to maintain a level of respect for all students and carry themselves as individuals. If you feel your child will be interruptive to the flow of class, or hinder your independent learning, this class will not be for them and we encourage you to look at our children's survival classes, which are specifically structured for kids. Students below the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The ticket price covers the cost of 1 student, regardless of age.

This class will be held both indoors and outdoors. There will be lecture parts of class inside, and hands-on training scenarios outside. Please dress according to the weather. Bathroom facilites are available. All training materials will be provided.

Required Materials:

  • Appropriate clothing for weather
  • Water, lunch, and snacks
  • Notebook and Pen
  • Any first aid supplies and gear you usually bring on hikes

Dustin's Story and Bio:

Who am I? First and most important, I am a humble servant of God, a Husband, and a father of 4. 2003 was the beginning of my career in San Antonio Fire, becoming a Paramedic in 2006, and a Lieutenant in 2015. At age 30, still wanting to serve more, I joined the U.S. Army Reserve and became a Blackhawk Pilot. My amazing wife started a Summer Camp where I have had the honor and pleasure of teaching kids survival skills based on SERE training in the army, as well as some first aid/trauma care and other outdoor activities. As part of my career in SAFD, I also had the honor of instructing Rescue Task Force crews – this is where Police and Fire/EMS team up and make entry in the event of a hostile environment where patients need immediate care. After having kids of our own, like any parent, I wanted them to be able to help themselves and others. Keeping it lighthearted, my 2 older girls and I had a fun time doing CPR and traumatic injury scenarios and they became very proficient even at ages 5 & 7. They seemed to gain a sense of empowerment and of service to others. Parenting win! They had skills, now they needed a kit. The kid’s kits on the market were too limited in capability in my opinion. Band-Aids and unicorn stickers won’t help a major bleed, broken bone, or shock. So I built them a compact, ultra capable kid’s kit. The first time one of my daughters came home beaming with pride that she got to help someone else with her kit, it was a certainty that all of this needed to be shared with other kids. While I have also enjoyed teaching some adult civilian classes on certain paramedic skills, teaching kids really resonated with me. Having taken Army SERE down to a kid level, I was excited to take Paramedic skills and tools down to a kid level. The kits and classes took shape. After reading the Jocko Willink Warrior Kid books, my kids started calling them their “Warrior Kid Kits.” So here we are with Warrior Kid Medic kits and classes. But to me that is just a part of the greater mission to build up strong, capable kids. My classes teach, and the kits are a tangible symbol of a set of values: That you are never a victim, but a self-helper.

Never a bystander, but a Samaritan. You are respectful, hardworking, humble, and strong and healthy enough to act. You are a Warrior Kid Medic.
