This month we’re looking at Who’s Afraid of Gender? — a widely discussed recent book that takes on the current “gender debate” and asks what’s really driving the fear, confusion, and political noise around it.
Butler explores how “gender” has become a flashpoint in global politics, arguing that it’s often turned into a kind of moral panic and used to undermine wider struggles for equality.
Read a review of the book in the Guardian: Who’s Afraid of Gender? by Judith Butler review – the gender theorist goes mainstream "The US activist, who has been falsely accused of denying the importance of sex, makes a plangent appeal for gender diversity" https://www.theguardian.com/books/2024/mar/13/whos-afraid-of-gender-by-judith-butler-review-the-gender-theorist-goes-mainstream?utm_source=chatgpt.com
The book connects debates about gender to bigger questions about power, identity, freedom, and how narratives are shaped in society.
As always, this is a relaxed, open discussion group — you don’t need to have read the book to come along. The book is just a starting point for a wider conversation.
If you want a quick way in, here’s a clear and engaging overview of Butler’s ideas:
