About this Event
An exciting new heritage project for LGBTQIA+ 18-25 year olds - When You Were Me will bring together different generations of LGBTQIA+ people based in Newcastle upon Tyne to reflect on the city’s LGBTQIA+ history through film, music, theatre and art. Creating an exciting digital mural and map of our community’s culture.
Launching in May 2024 and running until July 2024, get involved and meet artists, take part in creative workshops, share stories and together, uncover and celebrate the community’s history in your city.
The project will take place in multiple venues and locations in central Newcastle upon Tyne.
When You Were Me is being funded by Historic England’s History in the Making grant programme. This new grant programme has been launched to encourage young people to engage with and celebrate their local heritage.
When You Were Me is also supported by Discovery Museum, Lit and Phil, One Strawberry Lane and Theatre Royal.
For LGBTQIA+ 18-25 year olds. Taking part is free, sign up required.

Walking, mapping and talking - Exploring LGBTQIA+ heritage in Newcastle's city centre
Saturday 4th May, 3:30 - 6:30pm from Great North Museum: Hancock (Barras Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne NE2 4PT)
About: Join Curious Arts and Incursions as we explore Newcastle's LGBTQIA+ heritage by journeying through the city centre and reflecting on our community’s history in the city.
Guided by photos, stories, and discussions, we'll uncover hidden narratives and envision futures where our heritage is visible and celebrated. Ending at the Magic Hat Cafe, we'll share food and deepen our exploration, creatively mapping the stories we have uncovered.
This date is open to anyone 18+. Free to attend, sign up required. Sign up now by selecting the date under 'Get Tickets'.
