Health Promotion Topic: Alpha Gal Tick Syndrome
In line with Centro Latino’s Health Promotion priority, we’ve decided to organize a fundraiser dinner to bring awareness of the disease to the general public in Columbia, MO.
In 2023-2024, Missouri was identified as one of the states with the highest number of people testing positive for Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS), an allergic reaction to tick bites. The Lone Star tick is thought to be the primary spreader of AGS in Missouri.
The alpha-gal tick, also known as the lone star tick (Ambylomma americanum), is a vector that transmits a sugar molecule called alpha-gal (galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose). When a person is bitten by an alpha-gal tick, their immune system develops an allergy to alpha-gal, which is present in the meat of most mammals (including beef, pork, lamb, and venison).
This Conversation & Food event will help to inform the general public of the significance of having a vegan kitchen available in town as well as knowledgable individuals who are willing to discuss AGS and its effects on diet and health for Missourians.
Dinner served 6-8pm:
Tamal with rice, beans, and pico de gallo
