What to know about your disabled child's transition to adulthood

As special needs parents, we have a lot of experience and we sort of get the hang of things after 17 years or so. But our kids turn into legal adults when they turn 18 which means there are NEW programs to apply for, NEW situations to deal with, NEW challenges and NEW opportunities. I spent a year planning for my son's transition into adulthood which included his application for SSI, Medicaid Waiver program, and Guardianship (a form of legal protection). It was a lot of work and there are many things that need to be considered.
