Empower your advocacy journey and set your child tup for academic, social, and emotional success. Hosted by Mercedes Lawson, M.S.Ed, Founder of A.C.C.E.S.S. (Equitable Education for All), the sessions were designed to provide parents and guardians with the practical tools, legal insights, and confidence needed to navigate the complexities of the special education system.
Whether your child is just entering the school system or you are trying to resolve a disagreement regarding their current Individualized Education Program (IEP) or accommodations, these sessions offer direct, expert guidance to help you secure the equitable education your child deserves.
What to Do When You Don't Agree with the School
Date: Saturday, September 5
Time: 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM
Focus: Disagreements regarding services, placements, or accommodations can be incredibly stressful. When the school’s data or proposals don't align with what you know your child needs, you have rights. This session covers collaborative dispute resolution, understanding your procedural safeguards, how to formalize your disagreement in writing, and the constructive steps you can take to advocate firmly for your child while maintaining a functional working relationship with the district.
To accommodate busy schedules and different comfort levels, both workshops are being offered in two formats:
In-Person Attendance: Join us live to network with other parents, ask questions directly, and engage in hands-on collaborative discussions.
Virtual Attendance: Can’t make it to the venue? Join our interactive live stream from the comfort of your home. A digital meeting link will be emailed to all virtual registrants prior to the session start time.
On-Site Childcare Information: We believe that access to crucial educational information shouldn't be limited by childcare barriers.
Location: Childcare will be hosted on-site at We Rock the Spectrum - Kid’s Gym (Franklin location).
Cost: Only $10 per child for the duration of the 2-hour class.
Details: While you focus on learning and advocating for your student, your kids can play safely in an inclusive, sensory-safe environment.
Please note: On-site childcare is exclusively available for in-person participants, and pre-registration for childcare is strictly required due to capacity limits.
Meet Your Instructor: Mercedes Lawson, M.S.Ed As the founder of A.C.C.E.S.S., Mercedes Lawson holds a Master of Science in Education and specializes in creating equitable pathways for all learners. With years of experience navigating school systems, analyzing data, and partnering with families, she brings a wealth of professional expertise, empathy, and actionable strategies to help parents become their child's best advocate.
