About this Event
Join us for a lively West African Drum Circle with Yahaya Kamate! Feel the rhythm and energy as we come together at The Space to experience the vibrant beats of West African drumming.
This community drum circle is intended to honor and uplift our connection to spirit together. It is a sangha – a communal celebration of rhythm, music making, and life – that we hope will become a monthly event. We will primarily use the djembe, a powerful drum that has been an essential part of West African music and culture for centuries. You are welcome to bring your own if you have one, or borrow one if there are enough available.
The circle will be led by Yahaya Kamate. He is the Associate Artistic Director of the Seventh Principle Performance Company and the Founder of Kamate Traders, “trading art for smiles”. He has performed worldwide and soloed with companies including the National Ballet Cote D’Ivorie, Ballet D’Afrique, and Mask Dance Company. He has taught at Mark Morris Dance Center, for NY and NJ Young Audiences, Alvin Ailey, and elsewhere. He has been with Seventh Principle as principal artist/choreographer since 1997. He has taught and performed for Center for Modern Dance Education since 2004.
The circle is open to all, although if you are completely new to drumming we would ask you to take some time to observe and listen. A very brief lesson on how to drum may be offered at the beginning depending on the level of drumming skill of the attendees.
Dancers are also welcome! Move your body if you feel the spirit.
