Two-Day WorkshopSaturday & Sunday, May 4 & 5 • 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
How do we represent ourselves as the subject of our own art? As our own most-available model, we easily can study and depict our own likeness by looking in a mirror. We can also choose to represent ourselves from the imagination — as we see or comprehend ourselves in our mind’s eye. Furthermore, our concept of self may be founded on our personality, interests and pursuits, or environment. We will explore the Fenimore Museums exhibition, As They Saw It: Women Artists Then and Now, for inspiration on how other artists have represented both their physical appearance and identity. For example, Polly Thayer carefully studies her studies her countenance in a delicate charcoal sketch. Ellen Day Hale’s self-portrait reveals her confident personality and fearlessness in challenging social codes. Catherine Murphy depicts herself in the act of painting in her studio, and Oriole Farb invites us to contemplate the act of representation itself by painting her image taking a photo of herself in a mirror. In this class, students will be encouraged to think about self-representation as an intersection of who they are, their physical appearance, the environment they inhabit, and objects and traits they associate with themselves. The form the portrait will take will depend on the student’s individual concept and preferred materials. Personalized instruction will be provided accordingly.
Materials: Easels and tables will be provided. For those wishing to draw/paint from life, please bring a mirror. Students will need to bring all other materials depending on their desired project. Please contact us in advance if you have any questions. The class is open to students of all levels. Limited to 12 students.
