Join us for Weaving Worlds, a symposium celebrating the next generation of changemakers and researchers emerging from MA Applied Imagination
About this Event

This year, we are applying our imaginations to redefine and challenge what a symposium is or could be, presenting a series of participatory workshops, talks and performances that showcase the bold provocations and research processes of our cohort.
The title, Weaving Worlds, represents the ways diverse ideas, disciplines, and communities converge within each student project to create a more connected and future-proof world. Through action research, storytelling, and experimentation, we reveal how creativity can be a tool for real change, one thread at a time.
Featuring keynote speeches and panel talks from: Martin Kunze (Memory of Mankind), MAAI Course Leader Richard Reynolds (author of Superculture), Premila Van Ommen (author of Transmitting Traditions), and Sonja Dimitrova (founder of Tone & Detail).
Step into a space where imagining otherwise becomes a force for change and discover how today’s creative researchers are weaving the worlds of tomorrow.

Meaghan Simone - The Space Between

A parallel play experience centring belonging and neurodivergence.
Explores neurodivergence and self-reflection; some content may be emotionally sensitive.
15:15-16:45 / LVMH (E003); Workshop, Performance/Installation

Hanyao Song (Kyle) - Planting Nan Ting

Presenting a community story from 10000km away.
17:15-18:00 / LVMH (E003); Presentation

Jin TangAmber) - Combing the Red Thread

Part dance performance, part participatory art instillation, this piece explores research around societal expectations for young Chinese women.
Contains sensitive themes related to gender, marriage, and female autonomy in Chinese culture.
18:00-18:45 / The Street; Performance/Installation

Richard Reynolds - Weaving Supercultures

A panel discussion between;

  • Matt Costello (author of 'Secret Identity Crisis: Comic Books and the Unmasking of Cold War America')
  • Lorraine Henry King (author of 'Heroic Skin: Superheroes, Excess and Black Skin as Costume')
  • Guy Lawley (former editor of 'Comics Forum' and CSM PHD candidate)
  • Joan Ormrod (editor of 'The International Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics' and author of 'Wonder Woman: The Female Body and Popular Culture')
  • Anna Peppard (author/editor of 'Supersex: Sexuality, Fantasy, and the Superhero')
  • Richard Reynolds (author of 'Superheroes: a Modern Mythology' and the forthcoming 'Superculture')

Weaving supercultures asks the question, why are superheroes so easily drawn into parallel worlds, and what does this mean for contemporary culture?
19:00 - 20:00 / LVMH (E003)

Stay tuned for more updates on events and speakers during the symposium.
