Class 1: Weaving Nature: Threadless Pine Needle Basketry
Students will learn the technique of coiling pine needles into baskets without using thread, a rare and ancient technique rooted in ancestral practices. We’ll begin with a discussion on sustainable foraging and how to identify and prepare pine needles, which I harvest, clean, and dye.
We’ll also discuss basketry traditions across cultures and the ecological importance of pine trees. By the end of the session, students will walk away with a strong foundation in threadless basketry, a nearly finished piece, and the skills to continue weaving at home.

Instructor Bio:
Abeni [ahh-ben-knee] Pierson is a California-based fiber artist and educator, originally from the suburbs of Chicago. After studying fashion design at Columbia College in Chicago, she shifted paths upon realizing the environmental harm and wastefulness of the fashion industry. This awakening led her to explore more sustainable practices rooted in nature. Through pine needle basketry, Abeni creates work that honors traditional folk methods while promoting environmental mindfulness and hands-on creativity.
