Learn the basics of the stunning art of Japanese resist dyeing using indigo
About this Event

This introductory shibori workshop includes all the materials and guidance you need to explore the amazing art of Japanese resist dyeing! Join instructor Tanya Lieberman for a day of intricate indigo at the Fibershed Learning Center.

ꕤꕤꕤ In this course, you will learn:

  • The history and tradition of shibori in Japan and its modern adaptations
  • Fabric selection and preparation for shibori resist dyeing
  • Resist dyeing techniques in at least three traditional categories of shibori dyeing (folding and clamping, stitching, and pole wrapping), as well as some novel techniques
  • Preparing and using an indigo vat to dye your prepared fabric
  • Resources for further exploration of shibori

There will be ample time for you to create your own pieces, and by the end of the class you will leave with several beautiful indigo-dyed shibori creations and the skills to continue your shibori practice at home. There will also be opportunity to visit the dye garden and see the Japanese indigo Fibershed has grown from seed every year for 8 generations.

ꕤꕤꕤMaterials included:

  • Precut and scoured cotton material for dyeing, or your choice of bags, napkins, scarves, or dishtowels to dye
  • A set of resist tools to take home
  • A handout with resources for further exploration

Maximum 10 students.

Participants must also bring:

  • Any personal snacks, lunch, and beverages. Coffee and tea will be provided.
  • IMPORTANT: Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that can get dyed blue! Gloves and aprons will be provided, but this is a beautifully messy process. Expect that your hands will be blue by the end of the day.
  • A notebook and pen for note taking is encouraged.
  • If you have a favorite camp chair feel free to bring it; folding chairs will be available.

Instructor Bio:

Tanya Lieberman is a textile artist who uses shibori resist-dyeing techniques to create designs on fabric and paper. She was taught shibori by a beloved aunt who was one of the early students of this art outside of Japan. Shibori provides Tanya with a connection to her Japanese heritage while allowing her to experiment with novel and found objects. She finds particular inspiration in junk drawers and hardware stores.

Much of Tanya’s recent work involves the use of sushi mats to create shibori designs on fabric and paper. This theme is inspired by the rice farms of the Sacramento Valley, which supply nearly all of the sushi rice used in the United States. She also loves exploring other natural dyes from plants, fungi, and lichens.

Tanya lives with her family in Davis, California and works in Sacramento for the State Assembly.
