WEAVE YOUR OWN: Natural Fibre Garment Workshop

A full-day, hands-on workshop at Freeweaver Studio in Greenwich where you will weave your own top, wrap, or scarf from scratch on a Japanese floor loom — and leave wearing it.

No experience necessary. The day begins with a thorough introduction to freestyle floor-loom weaving: how the loom works, how to read the warp, how to build cloth intuitively using natural fibres including hemp, flax, wool, and cotton. You will learn to weave with confidence before starting your garment piece.

By mid-afternoon your cloth is off the loom. We finish, cut, and sew your garment in the studio so you walk out with a wearable piece you made entirely yourself — from cone of yarn to finished clothing in a single day. Every participant leaves with a finished garment. If your piece needs additional time on the loom, we will complete and sew it for you at the studio and post it to you within two weeks

The workshop takes place in a working weaving studio housing 20 Japanese floor looms, surrounded by the Natural Fibres exhibition featuring photographs by Britta Jaschinski and handwoven garments in hemp and flax. You make in the context of the full story: where these fibres come from, how they're processed, and what they become.
