Transforming Tradition: An All-Female Shadow Puppetry Ensemble Reimagines Southeast Asian Folklore
For generations, shadow puppetry in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Southern Thailand has been performed by men. Now, The Wayang Women, an all-female shadow play group, is redefining this tradition.
On December 7 and 8 at Kalm Village, the group will present Hantu Tetek, a performance that highlights female ghosts, figures often present but rarely explored from a feminine perspective in Southeast Asian folklore. These stories examine cultural themes like gender, motherhood, resilience, and the exploitation of nature—issues that resonate not just regionally but globally.
The Wayang Women ensemble includes a Malaysian puppeteer, Indonesian musician, Thai traditional instrumentalist, Indo-Dutch singer-songwriter, Malaysian vinyl DJ, Thai poet and designer, Malaysian music producer, and a co-producer from Myanmar.

ตลอดหลายชั่วอายุคน ละครหนังตะลุงในมาเลเซีย อินโดนีเซีย และภาคใต้ของไทยมักจะแสดงโดยผู้ชาย แต่ในครั้งนี้ The Wayang Women คณะละครหนังตะลุงหญิงล้วน กำลังเปลี่ยนแปลงธรรมเนียมนี้
ในวันที่ 7 และ 8 ธันวาคม ณ Kalm Village คณะละครนี้จะนำเสนอการแสดง Hantu Tetek ซึ่งเน้นเรื่องราวของผีผู้หญิง ตัวละครที่มักจะปรากฏอยู่แต่ไม่ค่อยถูกนำเสนอในมุมมองของผู้หญิงในเรื่องราวพื้นบ้านของเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ เรื่องราวเหล่านี้สะท้อนประเด็นทางวัฒนธรรม เช่น เรื่องเพศ ความเป็นแม่ ความอดทน และการขูดรีดธรรมชาติ—ปัญหาที่มีความสำคัญไม่เพียงแค่ในระดับภูมิภาค แต่ทั่วโลก
