Event Information.
The aim of the tournament is for everyone to have fun and experience a new sport, no previous experience is required. The children will spend the afternoon playing a series of games against other schools. We don’t expect teachers to have any experience either, we will have a briefing with the children on poolside on the rules and top tips for playing. We will still need teachers to remain on pool side to supervise their pupils, but we will have referees / roaming coaches to help with rules and skills. Each school should bring a team of 6 players from year 6, or year 5. There is no required gender ratio, mixed teams are encouraged but we realise this isn’t always possible.Players need to be confident in deep water and able to swim 25m without stopping, or working towards this (this is roughly Swim England stage 5-6 if teachers are aware of this). If schools are struggling for numbers with these requirements, the less confident swimmers can use floating ‘noodles’ to help if they are available at the pool. The games are played across the width so will sometimes be played in deep water where players will need to tread water and sometimes in the shallow end where they will be able to stand.Children just need to bring their swimsuit and a towel. If they prefer to wear a swimming cap they can but it is not required. We will provide team coloured water polo caps for them to wear on the day. Children can unfortunately not wear swimming goggles (injury risk with flying balls).
The rough outline for the day would be:
- Players to be changed and on pool side by 1.45pm
- 5 minute rules briefing
- 10 minute warm-up / practice
- Series of games played as a round-robin tournament, with a couple of minutes between each game. (If we have 8 teams there will always be 6 teams playing and 2 teams resting).
- Last 10 minutes – award presentation
- Players off poolside by 3.45
