SYNOPSIS:
Water from Snow gets its flavor from the harsh climate of Minnesota's north lake country, where a sense of stoicism cannot always hide huge emotions and frustrations. A Country/Blues/R&B/Pop-laced score adds authenticity to the story of a single mom, Kathy, who’s dealt with her mother’s coercive control by running away—mostly with men who use her and prey on her vulnerability.
When her mother dies suddenly, Kathy is set to inherit her mother’s café in her little hometown. However, Kathy won’t get the café—or any of her inheritance—unless she proves she can make money running it. Yes, her mother’s control stretches beyond the grave—and that café is the last place Kathy wants to be. But with the help of her old girlfriends, who never stopped caring about her, she faces her demons, begins to build a real home for her daughter, and discovers that she deserves “peace inside” at last.
Not that it's easy. Teenaged daughter Annie is smart, willful and has never fit in, given their transient lifestyle, and now she's determined to have a relationship with her dad, Free, who's still in their hometown, wants to be a real dad to his daughter, and has never moved beyond Kathy, the love of his life. As Kathy struggles with her past, she is not alone. In fact, every female character in the show has her own challenges, but as a group, they stand by each other.
This story addresses themes of domestic abuse and racism against Indigenous people, as well as championing the power of lifelong friendships. The ensemble also offers a snapshot of the rural Midwest, not as caricatures, but as real people with a deep and genuine connection to each other and the place they call home.
