War Virgin by Laura Westley is a gripping, deeply personal theatrical work that explores the emotional and psychological realities of war through the eyes of a young female soldier. Inspired by Westley’s own experiences as a United States Military Academy graduate and veteran of Gulf War, the play offers an unflinching look at the cost of service, both on and off the battlefield.Blending raw storytelling with moments of movement, music, and dark humor, War Virgin follows a soldier navigating the contradictions of military life: strength and vulnerability, camaraderie and isolation, duty and personal identity. As she recounts her journey from rigorous training to the complexities of deployment, the audience is drawn into an intimate portrait of resilience and transformation.
The play does not shy away from difficult themes, including trauma, power dynamics, and the challenges faced by women in a traditionally male-dominated environment. Yet, at its core, War Virgin is a story of survival, self-discovery, and reclaiming one’s voice.
