About this Event

Learn about the lost history of the Ghosts of Old Anacostia from John Smith & the Nacotchtankes to John Wilkes Booth and Frederick Douglass!

From the first Spanish and English explorations into the Chesapeake Bay to the British Invasion of Washington in 1814 to the neighborhood's sub-division in 1854 to the Lincoln Assassination to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968, Historic Anacostia has been witness to events of local and national consequence across centuries.

Learn some of the stories of yesteryear that explore the history and underworld of one of Washington's most iconic - and possibly haunted - neighborhoods!

*TOUR LEADERS*

John Muller, author of Frederick Douglass in Washington, D.C.: The Lion of Anacostia (The History Press, 2012) has been leading walking tours of Old Anacostia since 2013. Throughout the years many tour participants have asked about ghosts and a possible ghost tour. After many years of continuous research and collecting many oral histories from local residents, including the late Mr. George Rice of 14th & W Street SE, a ghost tour is finally being launched.
