Walkable North Berkeley
About this Event
This urban hike explores a very walkable neighborhood of historic homes, a delightful culinary shopping district, a trend-setting school garden, a "found objects" sculpture garden, and the sites of one of the first haciendas in the East Bay as well as an early Victorian residential development; a creek runs through it.
We will note a bit of architecture as well as a little history. There is modest up and down but no steep climbs.

This is a moderate hike of 3.6 miles roundtrip with about 300 feet elevation change.

Where to Meet
Meet at the northwest corner of Vine and Milvia Streets (1941 Vine Street), about a mile walk or short bus ride from the downtown Berkeley BART station. Parking is available on nearby residential streets (without the two-hour limit on Saturdays), but check signs just to be sure.

About the Leader
Bob Johnson retired after serving for 30 years on the Greenbelt Alliance Board. He has also worked with Urban Advantage to produce photo-realistic visualizations of better urban design. Previously, he worked for many years as a securities analyst in Japan and the Bay Area. With Janet Byron, he co-wrote the book Berkeley Walks, featuring self-guided urban tours. A 3rd edition of the book has been released. Bob and Janet are working on a book featuring Oakland Walks.
