Walk on The River 2.0 - SATX Black History Screening
About this Event
Walk on the River 2.0: The African Influence in San Antonio, TX
Join Melaneyes Media for a special screening of Walk on the River 2.0: The African Influence in San Antonio, TX, the prequel to Walk on the River: A Black History of the Alamo City.
The original documentary explored the African American experience in San Antonio from Emancipation through integration and the end of Jim Crow segregation. Walk on the River 2.0 goes further back to examine the presence and influence of people of African descent in this region before and during enslavement.
As the first civil settlement in Texas, San Antonio is filled with historic sites, untold stories, and cultural influences that helped shape the city. This documentary explores subjects including:
- The African presence in the Americas before Columbus
- The Moors in Spain
- Black people at the Battle of the Alamo
- Slavery in San Antonio
- Emancipation celebrations in Texas, including Juneteenth
- African symbols found throughout the city
- And more
Many people do not realize that people of African descent were present at the Battle of the Alamo, or that Black survivors were freed by the Mexican Army. Others are unaware that enslaved Africans were bought and sold in downtown San Antonio near Alamo Plaza, or that city officials were involved in the buying and selling of enslaved people.
Walk on the River 2.0 brings these overlooked parts of San Antonio history to the screen and examines how African people and culture influenced the city long before Emancipation.
The documentary features interviews with:
- Mario Salas — Historian, professor and former San Antonio City Councilman
- Ramon Vasquez — Member of the Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan Nation
- Nettie Hinton — Community activist
- Dr. Runoko Rashidi — Author, lecturer and scholar
- And others
