Discussion:
Human and AI Sensemaking in Toolbox Safety Conversations: How human insight and AI-supported analysis can work together without losing worker voice.
This session explores research in which 32 industry participants reviewed a toolbox meeting compared to AI, and how their different experiences shaped what they noticed, what they prioritised, and which controls they believed mattered most. The study found:
- That people and AI produced different, but complementary, forms of safety intelligence.
- People exposed the lived reality of work: pressure, uncertainty, local knowledge, weak signals, mixed messages and brittle controls.
- AI helped organise the conversation, clarify themes, identify missing accountabilities and make monitoring points and reset triggers easier to see.
Used well, AI can help organisations:
- notice weak signals that may otherwise be normalised
- compare different interpretations of the same work
- identify where controls may be fragile
- clarify who is monitoring what
- recognise when conditions have changed enough to stop and reset
- turn everyday conversations into meaningful organisational insight
Participants in the session will experience the same "toolbox talk" video, complete their own analysis, and we will compare live what the group found to AI results.
