About this Event
Help us create memorable family outdoor experiences across the DC, Maryland, and Virginia region. Volunteers support events, community outreach, and behind-the-scenes work that brings families together outdoors.
About Youth Fishing League
Youth Fishing League is a free, family-centered nonprofit that brings kids and their families together through fishing, outdoor learning, and shared community experiences. We are fiscally sponsored by Angels for Angels and based in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia region.
In 2024 we started with a 30-person pilot. In 2025 we grew to 195 participants across two events with a 40 percent repeat attendance rate. In 2026 we are running seven events with 600+ expected participants, including events at Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary, Lake Halcyon, the Anacostia RiverFest, and more.
Why We Need Volunteers
We are creating shared moments between kids and the adults in their lives. A kid catching a fish is great. A kid catching a fish with their parent or guardian standing next to them is something different.
Volunteers make these moments possible. Whether you are helping at an event, supporting our community outreach, or contributing skills behind the scenes, you are helping us build something that matters across the DMV.
Ways You Can Help
We have multiple ways to get involved depending on your interests and availability. You do not have to do everything. Tell us what fits.
At our events:
- Help with check-in, setup, and breakdown
- Support food service and family hospitality
- Assist with on-site logistics and crowd flow
- Help families with basic fishing instruction (training provided, no fishing experience required)
- Help take and share photos with families
- Support our Maurice Frye Reading Corner and youth education stations
- Welcome families and help newcomers feel comfortable
Behind the scenes:
- Help with social media and community outreach
- Support volunteer coordination and recruitment
- Assist with research and partnership outreach
- Help with grant writing or sponsor communication
- Contribute design, writing, or photography skills
- Help with event planning and logistics
You Do Not Need to Know How to Fish
Most of our volunteer roles do not require any fishing experience. We will train you on anything you need to know on the day of the event. What matters most is being friendly, helpful, and comfortable around kids and families.
Who We Are Looking For
- People who enjoy working with kids and families
- People who want to spend time outdoors and contribute to their community
- Reliable volunteers who can commit to specific event dates
- Skilled volunteers who want to contribute remotely between events
- Corporate teams looking for meaningful volunteer days
- Anglers, mentors, educators, and outdoor enthusiasts
Time Commitment
Flexible. Some volunteers help at one event per season. Others contribute a few hours per week behind the scenes. Corporate teams can sign up for full event days. We will work with what you can offer.
Locations
Our events take place across Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia. Behind-the-scenes volunteer work is fully remote. This event in particular is at Lake Halcyon in MOntgomery County.
