Voces del Bullerengue
From the deep countryside of Colombia’s Afro-descendant Maroon Caribbean emerges Voces del Bullerengue, a Latin Grammy-nominated collective of elder women singers safeguarding the ancestral legacy of bullerengue. This traditional music and dance style is rooted in rural communities near Montes de María, including Evitar, María la Baja, San José del Playón, Villa Gloria, and San Cristóbal del Trozo, in Colombia’s northwest region. The project brings together cantadoras who have preserved this tradition as a living practice of memory, resistance, and community healing.

Special guest Lido Pimienta
Performing DJ set after our international guests).

As much as an iconoclast, Lido Pimienta is a healer. The trailblazing GRAMMY-nominated multidisciplinary artist—whose practice spans music, performance, and visual art—has been expanding sonically since 2010. She broke through with 2017's La Papessa, an experiment in alternative electronica that beat out the likes of Leonard Cohen and Feist for the coveted Polaris Music Prize. Firmly recognized as one of Canada's most innovative artists, the Barranquilla-born musician, now based in Toronto, made her name with a sound rooted in ancestral reconnection through the Afro-Indigenous rhythms of her native Colombia, combined with a DIY punk mentality forged through electropop.

With 2020's Miss Colombia, she sharpened cumbia, electropop, dembow, and chamber music into a cohesive and profound reflection on identity, beauty, and the realities of life as a Caribbean woman with Wayuu roots. After the Miss Colombia tour was postponed, Pimienta immersed herself in classical music. The result was the Gregorian chant-inspired La Belleza, a decolonization of the European classical tradition born from her ballet composition Lux Aeterna, a historic collaboration with choreographer Andrea Miller that made Pimienta the first woman of colour to compose for the New York City Ballet.

Lido's most recent album, Caribeña, was initially conceived as a B-side to La Belleza, but the project took on a life of its own and became a complete collection steeped in everything Pimienta has always stood for: resistance, connection, and a desire to push sonic boundaries.

Honouring the deep traditions of bullerengue that have long grounded her artistic practice, Lido Pimienta worked closely with Lula Music and Arts Centre to envision and bring Voces del Bullerengue to Toronto. She has played an integral role in shaping this special project, helping to connect audiences with master tradition bearers while also contributing the artwork for the ensemble's first Canadian tour.
