Let Go of Perfectionism
About this Event
Let Go of Perfectionism
Guided Group Hypnosis in Downtown Toronto (to join virtually, please refer to the FAQ)
A guided group hypnosis session designed to help you loosen unrealistic standards, tolerate imperfection, and complete meaningful work without endless self-criticism.
Perfectionism can look like ambition from the outside.
You prepare carefully. You notice details. You care about doing things well. Yet behind those strengths, there may also be a persistent fear of making the wrong choice, overlooking something important, disappointing someone, or producing work that could be criticized.
As a result, you may overthink, overprepare, revise repeatedly, avoid unfamiliar challenges, or delay finishing because the result never feels sufficiently certain.
Perfectionism is not always the pursuit of excellence. Often, it is an attempt to protect yourself from embarrassment, regret, criticism, or the possibility of discovering that your best effort has limits.
This session uses guided hypnosis to help you maintain healthy standards while becoming less governed by the demand to be flawless.
This session may be especially helpful if you:
- Spend excessive time revising, checking, or preparing
- Delay submitting work because it never feels completely finished
- Avoid starting when you are uncertain you can perform well
- Feel disproportionately upset by small mistakes
- Struggle to make decisions without complete information
- Interpret criticism as evidence of personal inadequacy
- Find it difficult to delegate or trust other people’s work
- Compare yourself with idealized versions of other people
- Discount successful outcomes because they could have been better
- Feel unable to rest while something remains unfinished
- Hold yourself to standards you would never impose on someone else
- Have difficulty enjoying an achievement before focusing on the next deficiency
What to Expect
The session begins with a brief introduction to the evening’s theme. Participants may suggest particular forms of perfectionism they would like addressed, such as overpreparation, procrastination, fear of mistakes, decision paralysis, people-pleasing, appearance concerns, creative inhibition, work pressure, or difficulty completing projects.
You will then be guided through a shared hypnosis experience centred on ideas such as:
- You can care deeply about quality without demanding perfection.
- A mistake can provide information without becoming a verdict on your worth.
- You do not need complete certainty before making a reasonable decision.
- Work can be valuable, useful, and ready even when it could still be improved.
- Other people are generally evaluating you more proportionately than you evaluate yourself.
- Criticism can be considered without being treated as humiliation.
- You can revise when revision adds value—and stop when it does not.
- An imperfect attempt teaches you more than a perfect plan that remains untested.
- You are allowed to be a capable person who is still learning.
- Your standards should serve your goals rather than prevent you from reaching them.
- Completion is not the abandonment of excellence; it is part of excellence.
Depending on the needs of the group, the session may also address fear of failure, fear of disappointing others, overthinking, imposter syndrome, procrastination, rigid routines, difficulty receiving feedback, or the tendency to turn every task into a test of personal worth.
The exact content varies slightly from one session to another, while the central purpose remains the same: helping you pursue meaningful standards without requiring yourself to be beyond criticism.
A Different Approach to High Standards
The opposite of perfectionism is not carelessness.
It is proportion.
A proportionate standard considers the purpose of the task, the available time, the consequences of error, and the value of further effort. A presentation for an important client may deserve more preparation than an internal email. A life-changing decision may deserve more reflection than an ordinary choice.
Perfectionism ignores these distinctions. It treats nearly every outcome as though it must prove your competence, protect you from judgment, or justify your worth.
This session is designed to help you preserve conscientiousness while giving up the impossible requirement that everything you produce must make you invulnerable.
The goal is not to stop improving. It is to improve without making peace of mind dependent on an unreachable standard.
Who Can Attend?
No previous experience with hypnosis is required. You may participate quietly, and you will not be required to disclose your mistakes, insecurities, or personal circumstances to the group.
You may attend with a particular situation in mind, such as a project, decision, presentation, creative pursuit, academic goal, or professional responsibility. You may also attend simply to develop a more flexible and sustainable relationship with your own standards.
Each session stands on its own. You are welcome to attend once or return regularly to reinforce the ideas and apply them in different areas of your life.
This event is an educational and experiential group hypnosis session. It is not a diagnostic or individualized treatment program for obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, or other conditions that may involve perfectionistic thoughts or behaviours.
