About this Event

Join us for our first ever cross-book club collaboration as our ever-popular VOCE BOOK (CLUB) read SÁNCHEZ by ESTHER GARCIA LLOVET recently published in translation from the Spanish by FOUNDRY EDITIONS & Birmingham-based Spanish language book club LEYENDO EN BRUM read the same book in the original Spanish edition published by ANAGRAMA, followed by a cross-cultural, cross-language sharing of perspectives.

A nocturnal drift through the margins of Madrid, untouched by tourism or nostalgia, where lost souls cross paths with the surreal, and the city itself becomes a character. In this stark, luminous novel, Esther García Llovet returns to the shadows of the Spanish capital to trace the uneasy reunion of Nikki and Sánchez, two former lovers bound by shared history and mutual failure.

With clipped, exacting prose and dialogue that cuts like broken glass, García Llovet sketches a world that is both brutal and strangely tender—a Madrid of the mind, where the borders between absurdity, danger, and beauty dissolve. A singular voice in contemporary Spanish fiction, SÁNCHEZ confirms García Llovet as a master chronicler of urban estrangement and nocturnal grace.

We are also delighted to be joined by the book’s English translator & Foundry Editions founder RICHARD VILLAGE.

LEYENDO EN BRUM is a Birmingham-based book club for Spanish speakers who since 2023 have been meeting monthly to read and discuss Latin American and Spanish literature. With over 20 regular members, most of us being migrants, the group has grown into a vibrant and active community of friends who share a passion for reading and sharing ideas. In addition to being a space to talk about books, each meeting is a chance to catch up, speak in our mother tongue and have fun.
