Viva Acid and Dance Mania Legends announce a landmark Chicago event that celebrates the impact of Ghetto House over three decades, while calling attention to systemic inequities facing Black electronic music innovators. Taking place on Saturday, April 18th at Avondale Music Hall in Chicago. The gathering will bring together pioneering DJs and vocalists alongside the next generation of artists, who continue to evolve the sound.

Honoring the enduring legacy of Ghetto House and its evolution into the globally influential sounds of Juke and Footwork, the second annual Viva Acid Presents Dance Mania Legends traces the genre’s deep roots in Chicago’s late-1980s house music movement. By the mid-1990s, Ghetto House had emerged as a distinct sonic identity, defined by its raw energy, stripped-down drum programming, and bold lyrical expression. By 1995, the sound had entered wider cultural awareness, laying the groundwork for the rise of Juke and Footwork, styles that are now rapidly expanding across global dance music.

One of the largest assemblies of Ghetto House and Juke artists presented on a single stage, this Viva Acid and Dance Mania Legends collaboration brings together pioneering DJs and contemporary performers, expanding the genre’s reach. Original artists who helped define the movement will appear alongside emerging talent, offering audiences a rare opportunity to witness the living lineage of Chicago dance music culture in a single space.

Centering the innovators behind these sounds, the event also recognizes that many artists have received limited credit and compensation despite the global influence of the music. Four vocalists will perform, including Tish Bailey, whose voice is familiar to many Ghetto House fans yet remains uncredited on some of her most well-known recordings.

DJ Slugo of Dance Mania Legends comments:

“Give us our flowers while we’re alive. Support the artists who created this music while they’re here. When we do events, release music, and sell merch, that support helps keep this culture alive and allows the people who built it to continue creating.”

The April 18th event at Avondale Music Hall will feature a lineup spanning across multiple generations of Chicago's revered singers and DJs. Together, these artists represent a powerful cross-section of the movement’s history and future, highlighting how the sound continues to evolve while remaining rooted in Chicago’s cultural legacy.

Viva Acid comments:

“This event celebrates the people behind the music and the culture they built, as well as featuring performances by uncredited vocalists of popular records within the genre. By bringing these pioneering artists together on one stage, we hope to help restore recognition, create new opportunities, and support the creators who shaped this sound and continue to inspire the next generation.”

This showcase will also serve as a precursor to Viva Acid’s sixth annual summit, scheduled for October 1st-4th, 2026. The multi-day event will expand beyond performance into panels, workshops, and discussions exploring music production, promotion, cultural preservation, and the business realities facing independent artists. Sessions will also address financial planning, healthcare access, and structural inequities within the music industry while providing practical tools for the next generation of creators.

This event marks a historic reunion, bringing together the largest gathering of Ghetto House pioneers and Dance Mania artists ever assembled on a single stage. By uniting foundational figures of the genre with contemporary performers, the night celebrates more than three decades of a sound that helped shape the direction of global electronic music and its major position within the global scene today.

Serving as an important act of cultural recognition, the artists behind Ghetto House have influenced dance music scenes around the world for more than 31 years, yet many of the original contributors have remained under-credited for their work and creative input.

Beyond the night itself, the significant gathering represents part of a broader ongoing mission to support artists and advocate for systemic change. It builds upon solid momentum towards Viva Acid’s expanded summit in October, which will continue the conversation through panels, workshops, and discussions focused on cultural preservation, artist resources, and structural inequities within the music industry.
