Both heartwarming and heroic, the narrative is complemented by captivating illustrations by Ukrainian artist Alexandra Dikaia, bringing the story’s characters and settings to life. Whether read aloud at bedtime, used in a classroom setting, or independently explored at the weekend, Vitalii Petrenko and the Secret of the Roman Baths ignites the imagination while spotlighting Britain’s solidarity with Ukraine in a spellbinding and strikingly original way.
The event will include a discussion with the author and illustrator about the origins of the book and the challenges of publishing books in English for Ukrainian audiences; a special reception serving Ukrainian delicacies; and a special hands-on illustration workshop, led by Alexandra, where everyone will have the opportunity to draw a complex character — the dragon, Zmiy Horynych — in a very simple and accessible way. The event will be hosted by Zhenya Shkill, founder of Friends of Oleksandriya, a local charity which commissioned the book.
