Visible Mending Workshop with Kara Cooper from Mount Vic and Me
Join Kara Cooper from Mount Vic & Me for a hands-on introduction to the art of visible mending. In this relaxed and creative workshop, you'll learn simple hand-stitching techniques that can be used to repair and extend the life of your clothing, while adding character, colour and individuality along the way.
Visible mending is about more than fixing clothes. It's a practical act of resourcefulness that helps reduce waste, save money and deepen our connection to the things we own. Rather than hiding signs of wear, visible mending celebrates them, transforming everyday repairs into something beautiful and uniquely your own.
Bring along a garment that needs some attention, perhaps a worn knee, frayed elbow, small tear or favourite item that's been sitting unworn because it needs repair. Kara will demonstrate a range of accessible hand-sewing techniques suitable for beginners, and you'll have the opportunity to practise and work on your own piece with guidance and support.
No sewing machine is required. Hand sewing is portable, quiet, inexpensive and accessible, making it a valuable skill for anyone wanting to care for their clothes more thoughtfully.
The workshop will include:
* An introduction to visible mending principles and techniques
* Demonstrations of simple hand-stitching methods
* Guidance on repairing common areas of wear and tear
* A take-home pack including thread snips, a skein of silk embroidery thread, one Sashiko needle, some loose premium pins and embroidery scissors supplied by Minervas Bower in Katoomba
* Time to work on your own garment in a supportive group environment
Whether you're completely new to sewing or looking to expand your repair skills, this workshop offers a welcoming space to learn, create and connect with others who value creativity, sustainability and making the most of what we already have.
What to bring
* One or two garments in need of repair
* Any favourite fabrics, patches or threads you'd like to incorporate (optional)
* Your curiosity and willingness to experiment
Come along and discover how a simple stitch can help keep clothing in use for longer, while telling a story worth wearing.
