Virtual Robot Building with Onshape
About this Event
Virtual Robot Building with Onshape
Ages 13–18
In Virtual Robot Building with Onshape, students explore robotics, engineering, and mechanical design using Onshape, a professional cloud-based CAD platform. Through hands-on design challenges, participants learn how engineers and robotics teams design, assemble, and test robots in a virtual environment before building them in the real world.
Students will create robot frames, drivetrains, arms, mechanisms, and custom components while developing skills in engineering design, problem-solving, and mechanical systems. Participants will also learn how professional robotics teams use CAD to visualize, test, and improve robot designs throughout the development process.
A unique focus of this workshop is learning how to build robots using real-world engineering components. Students will learn how to find, import, and organize vendor STEP files for motors, gearboxes, wheels, bearings, sensors, structural components, and other robotic hardware. They will then assemble these components into a complete robot design in Onshape, gaining experience with mates, assemblies, motion, fit verification, and digital prototyping techniques used in industry and competitive robotics.
What Students Will Learn
- Introduction to Onshape and cloud-based CAD
- Robot design and mechanical systems
- 3D part modeling and assembly creation
- Importing and managing vendor STEP files
- Mates, constraints, and motion simulation
- Engineering design and problem-solving
- Virtual prototyping and testing
- Robotics concepts and applications
- Portfolio development and project presentation
Final Project
Students will design and present an original virtual robot that incorporates custom-designed parts and vendor-supplied components assembled into a complete mechanical system.
