Virginia 52 Hike Challenge - Backbay National Wildlife Refuge

Join 52 Hike Challenge Virginia for a 2.5 mile loop at Backbay National Wildlife Refuge. The trail leads hikers through a variety of landscapes, including freshwater marsh, viewing platforms overlooking Back Bay, dense wetlands, sand dunes, and beachfront areas, all while showcasing the rich diversity of wildlife that calls this refuge home. 

When: Saturday, May 16th, 2025 at 9:30 am. We will meet in front of the Visitor’s Center for introductions and giveaways. 

Skill Level: Easy 2.5 miles with 22 feet of elevation gain. The trail is relatively flat, making it suitable for hikers of all skill levels. There will be some soft sand as we cross over the dunes. The beachfront section has wet, packed sand.  

Bring your own snacks and drinks and dress for the weather. As always, please pack your 10 essentials for safety reasons!

Parking: There is parking at the Visitor’s Center. There is a $5 per vehicle entrance fee.
