Venturing with the Vanguard: Sarah Campbell & York

Experience history through the voices of two remarkable figures whose lives intersected with the Bismarck region and helped shape the American West.

Join nationally recognized Chautauqua performers Joyce Jefferson and Marvin Jefferson for an evening of living history that brings the past vividly to life through first-person performance.

Joyce Jefferson portrays Sarah Campbell ("Aunt Sally"), an early Black Hills entrepreneur who traveled with Custer's 1874 Black Hills Expedition. Campbell spent time in the Bismarck area before departing west and later became part of the Custer Mining Company. Through her story, audiences will explore frontier life, opportunity, and perseverance.

Marvin Jefferson portrays York, the enslaved servant of William Clark and an essential member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. During the Corps of Discovery's winter at nearby Fort Mandan, York became a well-known and respected member of the expedition. His story offers new perspectives on exploration, freedom, and the often-overlooked contributions of African Americans in the nation's history.

Following the performances, historian and Bismarck State College President Emeritus Dr. Larry Skogen will moderate a live conversation and audience Q&A with the performers, giving attendees the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the historical figures and the research behind the portrayals.
