Join us for an exclusive guided Engineering Tour of the Battleship New Jersey (BB-62), the most decorated battleship in American history. The New Jersey was built in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and launched on December 7, 1942, exactly one year after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
We will descend into the belly of the beast and learn about the state of the art and top-secret engineering of the time, including the turret of a massive 16-inch gun, the analog fire-control targeting computers, the engine room, the Combat Information Center, and much more. Please be advised that the tour will require climbing down and up very steep stairs and transiting through corridors with low headroom (nominally 6 ft with many overhead pipes and other obstructions). An alternative Main Deck Tour will be available for those who have limited mobility or do not feel comfortable being in tight quarters or going below the waterline. The tour is 90 minutes long and we will have lunch afterwards on the ship. After lunch, you may stay and explore the rest of the ship until closing time at 5 p.m.
The event is open to alumni, students (including incoming students) and their families and friends. The fee for this specially arranged tour is only $20 person, which is half of the regular price of $40. Parking will be an additional $15 to $20 depending on where you park. Last day to register is July 5 so please register ASAP at https://www.alumni.rpi.edu/s/1225/alumni/index.aspx?sid=1225&gid=1&pgid=11347&cid=25265&ecid=25265&crid=0&calpgid=13&calcid=14761 so you won’t miss out. Please select either the Engineering Tour or the Main Deck Tour during registration. The event is rain or shine.
During registration, please provide the best email address for sending you additional information and a cell phone number in case of last-minute schedule changes. Please see this link for some general information about what to expect during your visit.
