Urubhanga in Chitra Natakotsava
Urubhanga
(The Breaking of the Thighs) explored in contemporary and japanese kabuki form,
is a Sanskrit play by the ancient Indian playwright Bhasa, based on an episode
from the Mahabharata. It portrays the final moments of Duryodhana, the Kaurava
prince, after Bhima defeats him in the mace fight by striking his thighs,
violating the rules of combat.
Unlike the
Mahabharata's usual portrayal of Duryodhana as an antagonist, Bhasa presents
him as a complex and deeply human character. Lying wounded on the battlefield,
Duryodhana reflects on his pride, his choices, his relationships, and the
consequences of war. His father, Dhritarashtra, his mother, Gandhari, his wife,
and his son arrive to see him. Their grief reveals the personal cost of a war
fought for power and honour.
