About this Event
The China Planning Research Group (CPRG) would like to invite you to join us for the ‘Urban China Symposium: Rethinking China’s urban governance’ scheduled on 15 December 2025. Professor Fulong Wu at UCL will lead the reflection on the European Research Council Advanced Grant ‘Rethinking China’s model of urban governance’. Then, Professor George C.S. Lin at the University of Hong Kong and Professor Jane Duckett at the University of Glasgow will deliver two keynote speeches on China’s urban governance.

Professor Fulong Wu will introduce the project and the ERC team at the symposium will share their work on the project.
The team members include Dr Weikai Wang, Dr Ying Wang, Dr Yi Feng, Dr Zhenfa Li, Handuo Deng, Manqi Wang, Yining Liu, Jingyi Qin, and Sumu Lin.

16:00 - 17:00: Speech delivered by Professor George C.S. Lin
Title: ‘The Green/Smart Turn of China’s Urbanization: New Agenda for Urban China Studies’. Professor Lin is Chair Professor of Geography and Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong.
His research interests include China’s urbanization, land management, political economy of urban redevelopment and the emerging geography of low-carbon urbanism.
17:00 - 18:00: Speech Delived by Professor Jane Duckett
Titled ‘Beyond state entrepreneurialism?
Reflections on China’s changing urban governance’. Professor Duckett is Edward Caird Chair of Politics and Director of the Scottish Centre for China Research at the University of Glasgow. She is a political scientist whose research spans China’s urban governance, social policies and health system reforms as well as the China’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
