About the event:
You are invited to our upcoming October WAHLA workshop and mic "UPRISE!" on SUNDAY October 19th from 3-5 pm featuring Matthew Cuban and JayJay. Hosted by RAVINA;
This event will include an all levels writing workshop and open mic and a chance to meet these incredible featured artists up close and personal at a book signing after. This generative workshop & open mic was curated specifically to unearth and harvest the words that are daring and yearning to rise & speak. Participants are guaranteed to leave with a new piece through a dynamic set of features, guided prompts, mindfulness, community and spoken word. We will journey deep within the soul to excavate the words that have been yearning to be set free!
Tickets (Available Online until sold out): $16.00
Doors open 2:30 pm - Tickets includes guaranteed admission to the event, journal, writing utensils, and refreshments.
Parking: Parking may be challenging as it’s mostly street parking. There is FREE street parking on Cherry Ave, St Louis Ave, and Florida St. Carefully observe signage for time limits and metered spaces. Street parking down 4th Street is metered. There is also a PAID parking lot right across Plantiitas.

ABOUT THE FEATURES:
MATTHEW CUBAN:

MATTHEW CUBAN: Matthew ‘Cuban’ Hernandez is a poet, emcee, speaker, actor, and performance coach from Jacksonville, Florida. He has toured as far as Abu Dhabi and nearly every major city in the United States and Europe, performing, teaching and coaching poetry. A teaching artist for over 15 years, Matthew has spent the last ten years working in youth detention centers across Los Angeles County, currently serving as the Director of Camp Programming for Street Poets, Inc. In addition, he is a current Lead Teacher and Co-Founder of Spoken Literature Art Movement. Cuban has opened for artists such as Wu-Tang, performed for platforms such as BuzzFeed and NPR and even appeared on the award-winning television show, Better Things. For the last two summers Matthew lead an arts and culture delegation to perform, teach and speak in Havana Cuba. Matthew is also a three time Southern Fried poetry slam champion and an award-winning poetry coach. Leading both Da Poetry Lounge Adult team and Get Lit Words Ignite youth team to multiple finals appearances at National and International Poetry competitions. Cuban’s favorite activity is making people feel great; sometimes he does this through hip hop, poetry and healing circles.
YOUR HOST RAVINA:

RAVINA is a South Asian American, bestselling author, spoken word poet & licensed therapist, based in Long Beach CA. RAVINA was born and raised in StThomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. YELLOW is her collection of poetry published by World Stage Press & recipient of the Long Beach Best Poetry Collection of 2021. RAVINA has performed poetry on nationally and internationally acclaimedstages including the United Nations, and the House of Blues and has been featured in spoken word festivals, documentaries, and internationally accredited conferences. Ravina is atouring and performing spoken word artist with the collective Long Beach NeverSpeak! and founding director of Writing As Healing Los Angeles.
